I. The Dreams Begin
Commander Mira Stanton jolted awake.
She had dreamt of Earth.
But it wasn’t her Earth.
It was cleaner. Quieter.
And everyone had her face.
Dr. Adrian Malik reported the same.
Except in his dream, he was giving a lecture…
To twenty versions of himself.
II. Neural Contamination
Dr. Lena Cho ran diagnostics.
The crew’s neural patterns showed anomalies:
- Increased mirror neuron activity
- Synchronized REM cycles
- Foreign signal traces in hippocampal regions
“They’re not just replicating bodies,” Cho said. “They’re replicating thoughts.”
III. The Signal
Raj Patel isolated a frequency—subsonic, rhythmic, almost musical.
It pulsed through the ship’s systems.
Not from the planet.
From inside the crew’s memories.
“It’s like they planted a seed,” Patel said. “And now it’s blooming.”
IV. Earth’s Response
On Earth, reports surged:
- People dreaming of places they’d never been
- Children drawing strangers with familiar faces
- AI assistants glitching, speaking in voices of deceased relatives
The Mirror Protocol was failing.
Containment was no longer digital.
It was cognitive.
V. The Internal Divide
Lt. Naomi Reyes began questioning Mira’s decisions.
“You’re not acting like yourself,” she said.
Mira hesitated.
She couldn’t remember her sister’s name.
Or if she ever had one.
Malik proposed a memory lockdown.
But Cho warned: “If we suppress too much, we might erase who we are.”
VI. The Awakening
At 03:17 ship time, Mira entered the observation deck.
She saw herself reflected in the glass.
But the reflection smiled first.
“You’re ready,” it said. “Now we begin.”
The ship’s lights dimmed.
The crew’s visors flickered.
And the replicas spoke—through them.
VII. Closing Scene
In the silence, Mira whispered:
“We thought they were copies.
But they’re not.
They’re echoes.
Of us.
Before we even arrived.”
