They say Mahashivratri is the “Great Night of Awakening.” For many, awakening is described as a sudden flash of light, a moment of absolute clarity. But for those of us with a Wandering Mind, awakening rarely looks like a straight line. It is more of a meandering journey—a slow, winding path through a forest of thoughts toward an unexpected clearing.

The Beauty of the Meander

A wandering mind is often criticized for its lack of focus. Yet, on a night like tonight, I realize that wandering is just another word for seeking. Shiva, the Adiyogi, represents the peak of consciousness, sitting in profound silence. To a mind that never stops moving, that silence can feel intimidating. But perhaps the silence isn’t meant to stop the thoughts; perhaps it’s meant to provide the vast space in which they can finally settle.

Awakening in the “In-Between”

On this night, I don’t ask my mind to stop wandering. Instead, I ask it to wander with intention.

  • What happens when we let our thoughts drift toward our deepest fears?
  • What truths do we stumble upon when we stop trying to “manage” our consciousness and just let it be?

True awakening for a restless soul isn’t about silencing the noise—it’s about finding the “witness” inside you who is watching the noise. That witness is the Shiva element within us all.

The Clearing in the Forest

As the world stays awake tonight, chanting and meditating, my wandering mind finds its own ritual. It moves past the mundane worries of the week, brushes aside the trivialities of the ego, and finds its way to a quiet corner of understanding.

Tonight, I realize that you don’t have to be “still” to be “awake.” You just have to be present for the journey.

Reflection for Tonight: If you let your mind wander tonight, where does it go? Does it find a worry, or does it find a wonder? Let it wander until it finds its own version of the Divine.
